Access to Mission Planning Data In a Maritime Operational Environment

Scenario
The The Navy’s version of the Joint Mission Planning System (JMPS) is called the Navy Mission Planning System (NavMPS). Mission planners using both JMPS and NavMPS require access to large amounts of data in order to ensure missions are executed and operational objectives are met.
NavMPS and naval aviation mission planners experience unique challenges that shore based mission planners do not have to worry about. Specifically, challenges faced by conducting mission planning due to the characteristics of conducting naval aviation operations in the maritime environment. A problem mission planners identified in the 1990’s was the need for naval aviation mission planners to have access to large amounts of data needed to plan missions. Since most aviation squadrons deploy on aircraft carriers, reliable connectivity to datacenters on shore was a luxury when compared to planning missions on land. This problem continues to persist today due to the large volumes of data available and needed to perform missions despite advances in communications technology.
Long before the technology industry identified the need for a mobile on-prem datacenter capability, Gnostech developed the JMPS Application and Central Access Library (JACAL). The JACAL is a shipboard datacenter connected to the Navy’s shipboard tactical communications network that allows mission planners to access mission planning data generated from numerous sources.
Gnostech continues to update the JACAL based on operational requirements and to implement technologies that enable the warfighter to effectively plan for missions. Likewise, the JACAL has evolved and provides an on-prem cloud environment which facilitates modern software deployment and allows mission planners to access advanced warfighting capabilities.
